Ms. Maria Olimpia Barros Pinto

Investment negotiator, Directorate-General for Trade, European Commission

Maria Olimpia Barros Pinto is an investment negotiator in the Directorate-General for Trade of the European Commission. She is responsible for the investment negotiations between the European Union and China; she is also in charge of investment policy discussions with India and African, Caribbean and Pacific (“ACP”) countries. Within the unit responsible for developing and implementing the European Union's investment policy, she is a specialist on issues relating to investment protection. 

Before joining the European Commission, Ms. Barros Pinto worked as a lawyer at the leading international law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in Rome, where she dealt with numerous international and domestic arbitrations involving complex commercial disputes and public international law issues, and in commercial, civil and antitrust litigation in a variety of Italian courts.

Ms. Barros Pinto studied law with specialisation in public international law and EU law at the University of Pisa and holds a degree in legal studies from the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy.
